find jk=ac=12 and j+k=b=-8, then j and k must be -2 and -6

now replace -8a with -2a and -6a

a^2-2a-6a+12=0 now factor 1st and 2nd pair of terms...

a(a-2)-6(a-2)=0 which is equal to

(a-6)(a-2)=0

So a=(2, 6)
