Separation of powers ensures against oppression by isolating the focal government into three branches. Montesquieu thought of authoritative, legal, and the official branches so that one person or gathering will have all the power.

The separation of power guard against tyranny by breaking the government into 3 branches: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. To make sure none of these branches gets too powerful, the checks and balances system is used
