First find the arithmetic average, which is the "mean".
m=(17+8+5+12+20+12)/6
m=74/6=37/3
Now you sum up the differences between each value and the mean...
mad=(4 2/3+4 1/3+7 1/3+1/3+7 2/3+1/3)
mad=24 2/3
mad=24.7 (to nearest tenth)

There's 6 numbers so, when you calculate the MAD, you end up with 4.1 with the 1 repeating. You round it and you get 4.10
