BD is the whole segment, while BC is one part and the CD segment is the other. The sum of two parts must be equal to the whole.

Applying the expressions for each part we can solve for "x".

$\begin{gathered} 6x+4=77+(x-3) \\ 6x=77-4+x-3 \\ 6x-x=70 \\ 5x=70 \\ x=(70)/(5) \\ x=14 \end{gathered}$
