One car travels 10 mph faster than another. When one car travels 240 miles, the other travels 290

miles. What is the speed of each car?

Let

x ----> the speed of one car

x+10 ----> the speed of the other car

Remember that

The speed is equal to divide the distance by the time

we have that

x=240/t

t=240/x ------> equation A

x+10=290/t

t=290/(x+10) ----> equation B

equate equation A and equation B

240/x=290/(x+10)

solve for x

240(x+10)=290x

240x+2,400=290x

290x-240x=2,400

50x=2,400

x=48 mph

x+10=48+10=58 mph

therefore

The speed of each car is 48 mph and 58 mph
