The two main functions of a catalyst are
1: to decrease reaction activation energy and this is accomplished by providing the reaction with an alternate pathway which does not require as much activation energy
2: it decreases reaction time and this is done by decreasing the activation energy as well as arranging substrate molecules in a manner in which they are easily broken down
