Use a magnet because iron fillings attract to magnetic fields
But sand doesn't :)

HEY THERE
THATS EASY...
YOU CAN USE A MAGNET TO ATTRACT THE IRON FILLINGS WHICH WOULD THEN SEPARATE FROM THE SAND.
