Explain how there can be many versions of one gene

great question, OK let's see every phenotype character Is controlled by a pair of genes found on a pair of homologous chromosome each gene is controlled by a sequences of DNA arranged in the chromosome so if the arrangement are different from one chromosome to another it's effect on the gene will be different making different alleles for the character
