A pistil has three functional parts. The bottom (basal or proximal, in biology-speak) is the ovary. ... In some flowering plant species, the stigma is attached directly to the ovary, but in many there is a connecting structure called the style. The pollen tube grows into the stigma, down the style, and into the ovary.
