By refusing to run for a third term, George Washington set the standards of executive term limits. Although he could have ran for a third term, he felt as if that was an abuse of executive power and, therefore, set the stage for an unofficial two-term limit until it was made official after the third running of Teddy Roosevelt under the Progressive Party in 1912.
