Suppose that the great green galoofus lizard has fifty-two chromosomes in the nucleus of its body or somatic cells. How many chromosomes will be in the unfertilized egg of a great green galoofus lizard?

26 in it's eggs, which is half. Eggs are haploid while somatic cells are diploid

Answer;

The correct answer is 26 chromosomes.

Explanation;

-The body cells or somatic cells always have diploid number of chromosomes which means they have two sets of chromosomes in the nucleus.

-These cells undergoes mitotic divisions which results in the production of daughter cells that are identical to the parent thus the diploid number of chromosome is retained, in this case 52 chromosomes.

-On the other hand, gamete cells such as the unfertilized ovum, have haploid number of chromosomes, since they are the results of meiotic division which produces daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes as the parent, in our case this will be 26 chromosomes.
