A claim is the main idea that you want to put forward in an essay. Most of your essay, therefore, is dedicated to proving your claim. On the other hand, a counterclaim is an argument that expresses a different opinion from that of the claim. If someone with a different opinion than you puts forward a counterclaim for your claim, it is better if you address it in your essay.
