Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by Puritan colonists from England. Puritans are called what they are because they wanted to "purify" the Church of England of all it's catholic remnants. They ran into some snags around that time.

The Colony has strict rules governing behavior that were based on religion. The colony was open to other religions, but only other beliefs of Christianity.
