Why can you multiply or divide both terms of a ratio by the same number without changing the value of the ratio?

3:4 = 6:8


(3)/(4) = (6)/(8)


The same principle is used with fractions. The identity property of multiplication states that any number times 1 is the same number. Since
(2)/(2) = 1, the fraction/ratio does not change in value.
