To increase the friction, D . the object is to be pushed with a greater force against the surface.

According to newton's third law, to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
More is the force, more will be the reactionary frictional force acting on it.

Reasons for rejecting other options :
A. Frictional force does not depend on the distance.
B.More the weight , more is the friction.
D. Smoother surface enables smoother movement and less friction.
