John Wycliffe was an English theologian, philosopher, and reformer who reacted against the political and economic power of the Pope and priests. In 1376, he wrote On Civil Dominion where he criticized the Pope stating his strong opposition to the political power of the Pope when indicating that the Pope should not interfere in the administration of the state. In this work, he also condemned the economic power of the Church because, according to Wycliffe, property was the result of sin; Christ and the apostles had no property; consequently, the Pope and priests ought to have none and should come back to a life of humility, lowliness, purity, and veneration.
