To work this out you need to use the hypotenuse,

a^(2) + b^(2) = 8^(2),
Or simplify to:

2 * a^(2) = 64

Which can be halved:

a^(2) = 32
Which the root of 32 is 5.7.
So the answer is 5.7 miles.

Hope this helps.

diagonal: d=a√2(a is the side)
8=a√2
a=4√2miles
