The city-states of Greece were different because of their geographical location. Greece was made up of islands with individual city-states. This means all of the city-states normally didn't work together. If they didn't work together, then that means the city-states were allowed the benefit of developing their own cultures and styles within themselves. Hope this helps :) I just finished my unit on Ancient Greece so this information is fresh in my mind.
