Stalin wanted to create a protective barrier between the Soviet Union and western Europe to prevent a possible western-backed land war in mainland Russia.

Stalin wanted a "buffer zone" so USSR wouldn't get invaded by Germany again. It had previously been invaded twice in the past 30 years
