To charge the same amount , 12 tonnes would be transported . The amount charged when transport cost is equal is $6703

Representing the cost of the two companies with equations ; Let the number of sugar tonnes = x

First company:

  • 5500 + 100.25x ____(1)

Second company :

  • 4594 + 175.75x _____ (2)

To have the same charge , we equate (1) and (2)

5500 + 100.25x = 4594 + 175.75x

100.25x - 175.75x = 4594 - 5500

-75.5x = -906

x = -906/75.5

x = 12

To have the same charge, 12 tonnes of sugar has to be transported.

B.)

Cost of transport when charge is the same ;

5500 + 100.25(12)

5500 + 1203

= 6703
