There is a rope hanging from the top of a pole with 3 feet of it lying on the ground. When it is tightly stretched, so that the end just touches the ground, it reaches a point 8 feet from the base of the pole. How long is the rope

Answer:

length of rope
(P+3) =12.167

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

Length of rope on Ground
L_1=3 feet

Length of rope from pole base when stretched
L_2=8feet

Given length of pole as P

length of the rope is therefore given by

P+3

Generally the Pythagoras theorem is mathematically given by

P^2+8^2=(P+3)^2

P^2+64=P^2+9

P=9.167

Therefore

length of rope
P=9.167

length of rope
(P+3) =9.167+3

length of rope
(P+3) =12.167
