Well they were under control of the Soviet Bloc and under the iron curtain. Stalin essentially installed a communistic government once they drove the Germans out of Western Poland, which means they could control politicians and influence them to do certain things that favors the Soviets, they would threaten their lives and would insert their own people to gain power and keep the people in favor of Communism.
