Hello there.

How do I work out 4 + 2 x 2²?

Answer: Use PEMDAS.
2² = 4
Now you have this:
4 + 2 x 4
Multiplication is before addition.
2 x 4 = 8
Now you have this left:
4 + 8 = 12
Your answer is 12.
