When a solid exists in different crystalline form with a different physical properties is called as allotropy.
There are basic 5 allotropic form of carbon which are diamond, graphite, fullerene, carbon nanotubes and graphene.
In diamond each carbon atom is sp³ hybridized.
It is hardest natural substance with melting point of 3930°C.
Diamond is bad conductor of electricity.
In graphite each carbon atom is sp² hybridized.
Layers of graphite are hailed by weak Vander walls force.
Graphite is soft & slippery in nature.
In fullerene each carbon atom is sp² hybridized.
Fullerene are made by heating graphite electrodes in presence of inert gas.
C60 fullerene is the most common type and is also called as buckminister fullerene or Bucky ball.
Carbon nanotubes are cylindrical in shape.
Carbon nanotubes are robust and can be bent easily.
They have high electrical conductivity.
Isolated layer of graphite is called graphene.
Graphene sheet is a 2-dimensional solid.
