The immediate cause of the Atlanta Riot of 1906 was stories in the Atlanta newspapers about African-American men assaulting white women. By the end of the violence, at least eighteen African-Americans and three whites were dead. The value of the property damage from the riot was so high it could not be accurately estimated.
