The main basis of classification of living organisms are:

  • Cell type: whether prokaryote or eukaryote
  • Cell wall: present or absent and contents of cell wall (cellulose or noncellulose)
  • Body organization: unicellular, multicellular, tissue, organ, or organ system
  • Mode of nutrition: autotroph (chemosynthetic or photosynthetic) or heterotroph (saphrophyte, parasite, holozoic et cetera)
  • Reproduction: Sexual or asexual

Based on these observations the organisms are classified into 6 kingdoms namely:

  • Archaebacteria
  • Eubacteria
  • Protista
  • Fungi
  • Plantae
  • Animalia
