remember
rate of change/slope between (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) is
(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
so the average from x=-1 to x=4 is
(f(4)-f(-1))/(4-(-1))
f(-1)=-1
f(4)=4
average is (4-(-1))/(4-(-1))=1
average rate of change is 1
