How did the addition of new land in the west cause tension in the north and south

The addition of new land would lead to sectional tension over slavery. The north contained abolitionist, the south were pro-slavery, this increased tension because both sides wanted to extend their ideas into the west.

they had opposing views as to whether or not slavery should be legal in the west.
