you divide four by both sides... and four cancels out on the right so you are left with y. 88 ÷4 = 22 . y=22

88 = 4y

Lets flip this around to make it more readable:

4y = 88

This is basically 4 multiplied by y equals 88. To get y on it's own you need to divide by 4 on both sides:

4y/4 = 88/4

y = 22
