The correct answer is A) huge pieces of land were fenced for cattle ranching.

Barbed wire was invented in the late 1800s and its use spread throughout the West as an inexpensive way to fence in the land. The land use changed in the West after settlers began using barbed wire in that huge pieces of land were fenced for cattle ranching.

Before the invention of barbed wire, ranchers had to use wood to fence their livestock. Wood was more expensive because in many cases it had to be brought from the East side of the United States. Joseph F. Glidden, an Illinois resident invented the bared wire on November 24, 1864, and a new tool for wired fences became an option for livestock fencing.
