Tom plans to mow today to earn some extra money . He estimates that he will spend $1.80 on fuel and $3.45 on lunch. He will charge $11.50 to mow the lawn . what will be his profit for mowing the lawn?

You want to use this equation:
11.50-1.80-3.45=y, where y is his profit.
Since he spends 3.45 and 1.80, we're subtracting it, but he will gain 11.50 to mow the lawn.
