The force, F, acting on a charged object varies inversely to the square of its distance, r, from another charged

object. When the two objects are 0.72 meters apart, the force acting on them is 6.4 Newtons. Approximately how

much force would the object feel if it is at a distance of 0.83 meters from the other object?

Answer: Force will be approxmately 4.82 Newtons

Explanation:

Step 1

letThe force, F, acting on a charged object which varies inversely to the square of its distance, r, from another charged be given as

F ∝ I / r²

introducing the proportionality of constant,K we have

F ∝ I / r²

F =K I / r²

F= K/ r²

when the distance= 0.72, and force is 6.4 N, K will be

F= K/ r²

6.4N = K/ 0.72²

K= 6.4 X 0.72²

K=3.31776

step 2

when distance = 0.83, Force becomes

F= K/ r²

F= 3.31776/ 0.83²

F=4.82 Newtons
