complete the square since can't factor
2/2=1
add 1 to both sides
x²+2x+1-6=1
factor perfect square
(x+1)²-6=1
add 6 to both sides
(x+1)²=7
sqrt both sides
x+1=+/-√7
minus 1 both sides
x=-1+/-√7

so x=-1+√7 or x=-1-√7
