People were poor and the countries were ravaged. The demagoguery promised better times, like Roman ages in Italy, if they elected nationalists that were supposed to fight for their best interest. What actually happened was that they started a world war and wanted complete global dominance. Germans felt that they had been tricked after WW1 and that their punishment was too harsh.
