To "solve" equation with a single variable you perform whatever operations necessary to isolate the variable by itself on one side of the equal (or inequality) sign. Because it is an equality whatever operation you perform on one side you must also perform on the other side, otherwise you eliminate the equality of the expression or equation...

-7y=-84 divide both sides by -7

y=12

Okay, so first you need to divide both sides by -7!

That would leave you with y = 12 because:

-7y / -7y = y
-84 / -7 = 12

That equals
