what changes nitrogen in the air into another nitrogen compound tha can be used by plants to make proteins, amino acids, and DNA?

Most likely this sounds like Nitrogen Fixation, which is spread in the air to combine with other elements to form other compounds (ex: ammonia, nitrates, & nitrites.) Hope this helped.
