John Deere was a blacksmith and manufacturer who invented the first commercially successful steel plow in 1837.

Deere moved from Rutland, Vermont to Illinois. He found that cast-iron plows did not work well in the tough and sticky Illinois soil. He invented a plow made out of polished steel and a different moldboard, which was an instant success.
