A high school student reads four more biographies than historical fiction books during the semester. The student also reads two fewer mysteries than historical fiction books.

If the student reads a total of 11 books during the semester, how many of each type did they read?

Hello there.

If the student reads a total of 11 books during the semester, how many of each type did they read?

Answer: Put the values into an equation.
Historical fiction can be x
The equation is:
x + x + 4 + x -2 = 11
3x + 2 = 11
11 - 2 = 9
9/3 = 3
They read 3 historical fiction.
They read 7 biographies.
They read 1 mystery.

Hope This Helps You!
Good Luck Studying ^-^

b=h+4, m=h-2 now we are told

b+h+m=11, using b and m found above in this equation gives us:

h+4+h+h-2=11

3h+2=11

3h=9

h=3 and since b=h+4, m=h-2

historical=3, biography=7, mystery=1
