Look up the definition of calorie. Identify a calorie as it relates to food and apply it to three foods at home. Read the nutrition facts part of the label for the calorie listing. How do calories differ between foods, why? Do you recognize any themes from foods that have consistently high calories?

Some nutrients provide a certain amount of calories and food consists many different nutrients. Common nutrients that provide calories are protein (4 calories), fat (9), carbohydrate (4) and alcohol (7). Other nutrients don't supply calories but there are some exceptions.
