How did the crusades affect Jews

One of the reasons for the Crusades was the over population of Western Europe. When they went to the Middle East there were often significant battles and the Crusades killed large numbers of Muslims, Jews and they also killed large numbers of Eastern (Orthodox) Christians (perhaps more Christians were killed than Jews and maybe more than Muslims).
