Contraction of both the diaphragm
(the diaphragm
flattens) and the external
intercostals
(pulls the ribs up and out) will increase the volume of the thoracic cavity. This will cause air to move into the lungs (inspiration).

These muscles extend from a superior rib inferomedially to the adjacent inferior rib. They elevate the ribs upon contraction, thereby increasing the transverse dimensions of the thoracic cavity during inhalation.
