we know that

¾ cups of sugar --------> one cake

so

Applying proportion

Find out How much sugar would you need to make 12 1/2 cakes

First

Remember that

12 1/2=12+1/2=25/2

therefore

\begin{gathered} ((3)/(4))/(1)=(x)/((25)/(2)) \\ \\ x=(3)/(4)*(25)/(2) \\ \\ x=(75)/(8)\text{ cups} \end{gathered}

Convert 75/8 cups to a mixed number

75/8=72/8+3/8=9+3/8=9 3/8 cups of sugar

the answer is

9 3/8 cups of sugar
