A dozen of eggs is 12 eggs.
1/4 of 12 is 3, so 3 eggs have been taken.
2/3 of 12 is 8, so 8 eggs have been taken.
3+8 = 11
Therefore, 1 egg was left.
1/4 + 2/3 = 11/12

A dozen eggs is 12 eggs, 1/4 of 12 is 3 and 2/3 of 12 is 8. 8+3 is 11, 11 eggs are gone or 11/12 (:
