The astrolabe was used to measure the position of the sun, moon, and other bodies in space. Also sunsets, sunrises, moon phases, and latitude and longitude.

The astrolabe helped explorers determine their position at sea by use of the sun. They were able to find there position north and south of the equator by measuring the distance of the sun and stars above the horizon
