To estimate the height of the stainless steel model of Earth, you place a mirror on the ground and stand where you can see the top of the model in the mirror. The Unisphere is 100 feet from the mirror and you are standing 4 feet from the mirror. If your height is 5.6 feet, what is the estimated height of the Unisphere?

Answer: a. 140 feet

Explanation:

Let x be the estimated height of Unisphere.

According to the question, both man and Unishpere are standing vertiacl to the ground , and such that making the same angle with the ground.

Therefore, they are making similar triangles.

We know that the corresponding sides of similar triangle are proportional,

\Rightarrow\frac{\text{height of Unisphere}}{\text{distance of Unisphere from mirror}}=\frac{\text{height of person}}{\text{distance of person from mirror}}\\\\\Rightarrow\ (x)/(100)=(5.6)/(4)\\\\\Rightarrow x=(5.6*100)/(4)\\\\\Rightarrow x=140

Hence, the estimated height of the tree = 140 ft.
