One way is to escape the impression (is that the right word) of their leader, king, ect. and to create their own place with their own views.

One reason why colonies are founded is for economic gain. For example, if one was too find natural resources that are not in the area they are living in, they can set up a colony and harvest those natural resources as a way to create economic growth
