Why do items for sale have prices such as $2.99, $5.99, and $9.99 instead of $3.00, $6.00, and $10.00?

This is simple psychology of marketing and sales, nothing more. Statistics have shown, that people respond more favorable to a number of .99 or .95 more than the double zeros. Most people when shopping are doing what is called scanning. with scanning, all numbers are preceived in approximations.
