Why does bruno regret saying, “we’re superior,” to shmuel when he first meets him?

I think Bruno regret saying those to Ishmael because he didn't see the reality of between the Jews and Germans.  He regrets saying those words because he saw how the Jews were treated even in his household. Jews were beaten and considered inferior compared to Germans.
