Oxbows form in rivers because the water erodes soil from the outside of a curve and deposits material at the inside. The river in the picture has an oxbow bend.

If the river is left alone, how might the river appear 50 years from now?

it might dry up because of evaporation and there is no inlet tributary for the lake

The oxbow may become isolated and become a lake.
