5 = 2x − 3

Adding 3 at both sides of the equation:

5 + 3 = 2x − 3 + 3

8 = 2x

Dividing by 2 at both sides of the equation:

\begin{gathered} 8=2x \\ (8)/(2)=(2x)/(2) \\ 4=x \end{gathered}
